Birth Videography in NYC — Birth Film vs Birth Photography
Birth video is one of the fastest-growing requests in the NYC birth documentation space. Here is what it is, how it compares to photography, and how to decide what's right for you.
What Birth Videography Captures
A birth film is a short documentary film — typically 5 to 12 minutes — that captures the arc of your birth story. It includes:
Labor: the atmosphere, the intensity, the waiting, the support
The birth itself — edited with sensitivity
The first moments: first cry, first hold, first skin-to-skin
The first hours: feeding, family, the quiet intimacy of the postpartum room
Audio: your voices, the baby's first sound, ambient sound of the room
A birth film is not a raw recording. It is an edited, scored, intentionally crafted short film — typically set to music you choose or that your videographer selects to match the mood of your birth story.
The best birth films feel cinematic. Watching them is not like watching a home video. It is like watching a documentary about the most significant day of your life.
Birth Photography vs Birth Videography — What's the Difference?
Both capture your birth story. The experience of viewing them is fundamentally different.
Photography: - Still images — you stop on each one, sit with it - Better for detail: the close-up of a hand, the specific expression on a face - Easily shareable, printable, frameable - Better for the wall and the album - Better for images you'll live with daily
Videography: - Moving images, sound, music, narrative arc - Better for emotion in motion — the first cry, the moment your partner says your baby's name, the sound of that first hour - Watches like a film — 8 minutes you watch together on anniversaries - Better for showing family members who weren't there - Sound makes birth film uniquely powerful
The honest comparison: Still photographs capture the single most powerful frame. Video captures what happens between the frames.
Many families say that a year later, they reach for the video on significant days — the birthday, the anniversary — because it brings them back to the experience in a way still images cannot. Others say the photographs are what they live with, frame, and return to most.
There is no wrong answer.
Do You Need Both?
If budget allows — yes.
The two formats complement each other completely. A birth photographer captures the images for the wall and the album. A birth videographer captures the film for the anniversary. They do not duplicate each other.
When separate photographers and videographers are at a birth, coordination is required — two professionals in a confined hospital room, both needing access. This works well with experienced teams.
The combined approach at YourCherish: We offer births where one lead person covers both stills and video. For some births — especially uncomplicated labors in larger hospital rooms — this works beautifully. For others, two separate professionals is more appropriate. We discuss the right approach for your specific situation.
What to Look For in a NYC Birth Videographer
Birth-specific experience. Birth videography requires the same specialized skill set as birth photography — low-light work, handheld stabilization, audio capture in variable environments, anticipating unpredictable moments. General videographers do not automatically translate to birth work.
Sample films. Ask to see complete films, not trailers. A 2-minute highlight reel can make any footage look good. A complete film shows how the videographer structures narrative, manages audio, and handles the full range of a birth story.
Audio setup. The sound at a birth is as important as the image. How does your videographer capture clean audio in a noisy hospital room? Do they use a lapel mic? A room microphone? Ask specifically.
Hospital access. Same as photography — do they know your hospital? Have they filmed there before?
Backup plan. Essential for video as for photography.
