What Is Birth Photography in NYC? Everything You Need to Know
What Is Birth Photography in NYC? Everything You Need to Know
Birth photography is exactly what it sounds like — and also something most people don't fully understand until they see it.
Here is the complete guide.
What Birth Photography Is
Birth photography is documentary photography of your labor and delivery — from active labor through the birth itself and the first hours with your newborn.
A birth photographer comes to you at the hospital (or home, or birth center), documents everything that happens, and gives you a permanent record of the day your child was born.
Not posed portraits. Not recreations. The real thing, as it happens, by someone who knows how to be in that room with a camera.
What Birth Photography Captures
Every birth is different, but a typical birth photography session documents:
Labor
You and your partner in the hours before delivery — the intensity, the quiet moments, the focus
Physical support — hands, counter-pressure, the specific textures of labor
The hospital room environment — the monitors, the light, the details that will otherwise be forgotten
Your partner's face watching you
The birth itself
Crowning and delivery — documented with sensitivity and skill
The moment the baby is placed on your chest
Your partner cutting the cord
The first cry
The first look between you and your baby
The first hour
Skin-to-skin
First feeding
The first time the baby is weighed and measured
The faces of everyone in the room
The details — the bracelet, the tiny hands, the specific quality of light in the room
The first hours
Meeting siblings and grandparents (if present)
The first family portrait — real, unposed, extraordinary
What Birth Photography Is NOT
It is not intrusive. An experienced birth photographer disappears into the room. They are not directing, not staging, not asking you to hold a pose during a contraction. They are simply present and skilled. Most clients report forgetting the photographer was there for significant portions of labor.
It is not graphic in an unwanted way. You discuss with your photographer in advance what you want documented and what you don't. Every photographer has their own approach to the clinical aspects of delivery — you choose someone whose style matches your comfort level.
It is not just for people who want everything documented. Some clients want every moment. Others want only the first hour, or only the after-birth moments. Your photographer works within the scope you define.
Where Birth Photography Happens in NYC
NYC hospitals — every major hospital permits birth photographers. You typically list your photographer as part of your support team when you register for delivery. Policies vary slightly by hospital — your photographer should know your specific hospital's rules.
Birth centers — NYC birth centers are typically very welcoming of birth photographers.
Home births — birth photography at home allows for the most intimate, personal documentation.
At YourCherish, we photograph births at NYU Langone, Mount Sinai, Lenox Hill, NY-Presbyterian, Columbia, Brooklyn Methodist, Maimonides, LIJ, and all other major NYC hospitals, as well as birth centers and home births throughout the tristate area.
How Long a Birth Photography Session Lasts
Birth photography sessions are open-ended by necessity — birth does not follow a schedule.
Most photographers offer:
Full labor coverage — from when you call them in active labor through the first 1 to 2 hours after birth
Delivery + first hours — arriving at or near the end of labor, through the first 2 hours
Fresh48 — the first 24 to 48 hours, which is different from birth photography but related
Most full birth sessions last 4 to 12 hours on-site, depending on how quickly labor progresses.
Who Keeps the Images
You do. Professional birth photographers deliver all final edited images to you via a private gallery with full download rights. You own your images permanently and can print them anywhere.
Is Birth Photography Right for You?
Birth photography is for families who want the day to exist in a way they can return to.
Labor is one of the few truly unrepeatable experiences in a life. Your memory of it will shift and soften with time — more quickly than you expect. The images are the permanent record.
Twenty years from now, the image of the moment your child was born, the look on your partner's face, the specific light in the room — will be among the most significant photographs in your possession.
Whether that matters to you is a completely personal question. For many families, it matters enormously.
