When to Take Maternity Photos in NYC — The Complete Timing Guide

When to Take Maternity Photos in NYC — The Complete Timing Guide

Timing is everything in maternity photography. Book too early and your bump isn't fully showing. Wait too long and you're exhausted, swollen, and your baby arrives before your session date.

Here's the complete guide to timing your maternity session in New York City — by week, by season, and by time of day.

The Best Weeks for Maternity Photos

The sweet spot: 28 to 34 weeks.

This is when most experienced maternity photographers in NYC recommend scheduling your session. Here's why:

28–30 weeks: Your bump is visible and beautifully round, but you still have full energy and mobility. You can walk through Central Park, stand at the Brooklyn Bridge, sit on stairs in DUMBO without discomfort. This is the ideal window for outdoor sessions requiring any amount of walking.

31–34 weeks: The bump is at its most photogenic — full, high, unmistakably pregnant. You're still comfortable enough to move and pose naturally. Most in-home sessions happen in this window because the intimacy of the images matches the intimacy of late pregnancy.

35–37 weeks: Possible, but you'll want to keep the session shorter and choose a location close to home or doing in-home. The images are beautiful — there's a different quality to 36-week light — but your comfort is the priority.

After 37 weeks: We don't recommend it unless circumstances require it. You've entered the "any day now" zone, and the logistical and physical demands of a session add stress you don't need.

What If You Missed the Window?

You didn't miss it.

If you're reading this at 35 weeks, reach out today. We've photographed beautiful sessions at 36 and 37 weeks — in-home, shorter, focused on the most powerful images. Don't let perfect be the enemy of real.

The Best Season for Maternity Photos in NYC

Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November) are New York City's two golden windows for outdoor maternity photography.

Spring:‍ ‍

  • Soft, diffused light

  • Cherry blossoms in Central Park (late March–mid April) — the most requested backdrop in the city

  • Longer days mean more golden hour flexibility

  • Mild temperatures for comfortable outdoor sessions

Fall:‍ ‍

  • Foliage in Central Park and Prospect Park — amber, copper, gold

  • Lower sun angle = warmer, more dramatic light

  • The most photogenic season in NYC for outdoor work

Summer:‍ ‍

  • Beautiful light but intense heat — outdoor sessions must happen early morning (7–9am) to avoid midday sun and exhaustion

  • In-home sessions are often preferable in July and August

Winter:‍ ‍

  • Underrated and underused

  • Bare trees + low winter light = dramatic, minimalist images

  • Snowy Central Park sessions are some of the most extraordinary we've made

  • Shorter windows of good light (session must be afternoon)

The Best Time of Day — Golden Hour in NYC

For outdoor maternity sessions, golden hour — the 60 to 90 minutes before sunset — produces the most beautiful light in New York City.

In spring and fall, golden hour typically begins around 5:30–6:30pm, which works perfectly with most schedules. In summer, it pushes to 7–7:30pm.

The second best option: Early morning, 7–9am. The light is similar to golden hour — warm, low-angle, soft. Parks are quieter. You won't share your Central Park backdrop with 200 other people.

What to avoid: Midday sun (11am–3pm). It's harsh, unflattering, and creates shadows that no photographer can fully work around.

Best NYC Maternity Photography Locations by Season

Season Best Locations
Spring: Central Park (cherry blossoms), Brooklyn Heights Promenade, High Line
Summer: In-home, early morning DUMBO, Riverside Park
Fall: Central Park (Bow Bridge, The Mall), Prospect Park, Brooklyn Bridge
Winter: Central Park (snow), in-home anywhere in NYC

How Far in Advance to Book

8 to 12 weeks before your ideal session date is the right booking window.

In New York City, the best maternity photographers book quickly — especially in spring and fall when demand is highest. If you're due in May and want cherry blossoms, book in January. If you're due in October and want fall foliage, book in July.

Booking early also gives you flexibility. If your session date conflicts with a bad weather forecast, you have time to reschedule without scrambling.

NYC-Specific Considerations

Weather flexibility. New York City weather is famously unpredictable. At YourCherish, we build one complimentary reschedule into every maternity session for weather. We check the forecast together 48 hours before and make the call.

Permit locations. Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and several other NYC locations technically require permits for professional photography. We handle this. You don't need to research or apply for anything.

Parking and access. We plan your session logistics — where to park, how to access the location, what entrance to use — so you arrive without stress.

The Honest Answer

The best time to take maternity photos is whenever you feel ready, whatever week you're in, whatever season it is.

The bump is beautiful at 28 weeks. It's beautiful at 35 weeks. Cherry blossoms are extraordinary. So is winter light. So is the intimacy of an in-home session at 33 weeks on a rainy afternoon.

What matters is that you have them. Because the version of you that is pregnant — right now, in this city, in this light — doesn't come back.
