How to Choose a Newborn Photographer in NYC
Choosing a newborn photographer is one of those decisions that feels urgent and confusing at the same time. You are pregnant or you have just given birth, you have a phone full of tabs, and every studio looks lovely. Here is how families in New York actually make this choice, and what matters once the session starts.
Start with where the session happens
This is the biggest practical difference between photographers in this city. Some work in a studio you travel to. Some come to your home and bring everything with them. With a newborn, travel is the part families underestimate: the car seat, the feeding right before you leave, the elevator, the weather.
We photograph at your home and bring the full studio with us: lighting, backdrops, wraps and props. You stay where you are comfortable and your baby stays on their own schedule. Ask any photographer you consider: do you come to us, and what do you bring?
Ask about timing honestly
You will read everywhere that newborn photos must happen in the first two weeks. We do not believe in pushing that. Many families are still finding their feet in those days, and a session should never feel like one more deadline.
Early weeks give you sleepy, curled up portraits. A few weeks later babies are awake, curious and full of expression. Both are beautiful, and we photograph newborns at any age. A photographer who tells you that you have already missed the window is selling urgency.
Look at complete galleries, not only the best frame
Instagram shows the single strongest image. Ask to see a full session from start to finish. You are looking for consistency: skin tones that look like real skin, light that flatters your home, and parents who look like themselves.
Ask who is holding your baby
Newborn handling is a skill. Ask how the photographer is trained, whether posed shots are composited for safety, and what happens when the baby needs to feed. In our team, our photographers are trained in newborn safety and several of us are certified birth doulas, so we have held hundreds of newborns before yours.
Understand what you are paying for
In New York, prices vary widely because packages differ, not because photographers do. Compare three things: how many final edited images you receive, whether your family is included, and whether travel to your home is part of the price.
Our collections are Classic at $490 for 10 edited images, Signature at $790 for 20 and Luxury at $1,090 for 30. The Journey Collection is $1,780 for 60 photos across any two sessions you choose, for example maternity and newborn, or newborn and family. Payment plans are available.
A few questions worth asking
How many newborn sessions do you photograph a year? Do you come to my home? What happens if my baby arrives early or late? Who edits the images? When will I see them? Can my older child and our dog be in the photos?
