How to Pay for a Doula Using Insurance, Carrot, HSA/FSA, and Employer Benefits
Many families assume doula support is entirely out of pocket. It often isn't.
Between employer benefit platforms, HSA and FSA accounts, New York State Medicaid, and select private insurance plans, a significant number of YourCherish clients receive full or partial reimbursement for their doula services.
This page explains every reimbursement path available to families in New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut — so you can make the decision that's right for you without leaving money on the table.
Carrot Fertility
Carrot Fertility is an employer-sponsored benefit platform offered by hundreds of major companies. Carrot covers a wide range of family-forming and pregnancy support services — including certified doula support.
If your employer offers Carrot as a benefit, your YourCherish doula services may be fully or partially reimbursable through your Carrot account.
How to check:
Log into your Carrot account at get.carrot.com
Navigate to "Pregnancy Support" or "Birth Support" in your benefits overview
Look for "Doula" or "Birth Doula" in the eligible expenses list
Contact us for an itemized receipt formatted for Carrot reimbursement
Companies known to offer Carrot benefits include: Salesforce, Spotify, Pinterest, Snap, Lyft, Box, Dropbox, Reddit, Robinhood, and hundreds of others.
Don't see your employer? Log into your benefits portal and search "Carrot" — it may be there without prominent display.
Maven Clinic
Maven Clinic is a virtual care platform for women's and family health, offered as an employer benefit. Maven's maternity program includes coverage for doula services as part of comprehensive birth support.
If your employer offers Maven, your doula sessions may qualify for reimbursement under the maternity support category.
How to check:
Log into your Maven account or contact your HR department
Ask specifically about "doula reimbursement" under maternity benefits
Contact us — we can provide the documentation Maven requires
Cleo
Cleo is a family benefit platform focused on working parents. Cleo explicitly covers doula services as part of its birth support offerings, and many large employers offer Cleo to employees.
If your company offers Cleo, reach out to your Cleo guide and ask about doula coverage. We can provide all necessary documentation for reimbursement.
Progyny
Progyny is a fertility and family-forming benefit platform offered by many Fortune 500 companies. While primarily focused on fertility treatment, some Progyny plans extend to pregnancy support services including doulas.
Check with your Progyny care team about whether doula services are covered under your specific plan.
HSA and FSA Accounts
Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can often be used to pay for doula services.
The IRS classifies doula services as a qualified medical expense when the doula provides support during labor and delivery. Many clients use their HSA or FSA cards to pay directly for YourCherish services.
How it works:
Pay for your doula package with your HSA or FSA debit card directly
Or pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement with an itemized receipt
We provide detailed receipts coded for HSA/FSA reimbursement on request
Important: FSA funds expire at the end of your plan year (with some grace period exceptions). If you are pregnant and have FSA funds available, booking your doula early locks in your coverage before funds expire.
Contact your HSA/FSA administrator to confirm eligibility under your specific plan — rules vary by provider.
New York State Medicaid
New York State Medicaid covers doula services — one of a growing number of states to do so.
As of 2023, NY Medicaid reimburses for doula services provided by enrolled Medicaid doulas, including prenatal visits, labor support, and postpartum support.
Who qualifies: New York State Medicaid enrollees who are pregnant or recently postpartum.
What is covered: Up to 3 prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and up to 3 postpartum visits.
If you are a Medicaid enrollee in New York City, New Jersey (NJ FamilyCare), or Connecticut (HUSKY Health), please contact us to discuss your options. We are committed to supporting families at every income level and can help navigate the reimbursement process.
New Jersey FamilyCare / NJ Medicaid
New Jersey's Medicaid program is expanding doula coverage, with several managed care plans already covering doula services for eligible enrollees.
If you are enrolled in NJ FamilyCare, contact your managed care plan (Aetna Better Health NJ, AmeriHealth NJ, Horizon NJ Health, United Healthcare Community Plan NJ, or WellCare NJ) and ask specifically about doula coverage.
Private Health Insurance
An increasing number of private insurance plans cover doula services, particularly:
Cigna — select plans cover doula services under maternity support benefits
Aetna — some Aetna plans include doula reimbursement through their maternity programs
UnitedHealthcare — select plans and employer-sponsored UHC plans cover doula services
Blue Cross Blue Shield — varies by state and employer plan; worth calling to ask
How to check your private insurance:
Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card
Ask: "Does my plan cover doula services for labor and delivery support?"
Ask for the specific benefit code (typically covered under "maternity support" or "labor support")
Ask what documentation is required for reimbursement
Contact us — we provide superbills formatted for insurance submission
Employer Wellness and Maternity Benefits
Beyond Carrot, Maven, and Cleo, many employers offer standalone maternity or wellness stipends that can be applied to doula services. Check your employee benefits portal for:
Maternity support stipends
Wellness reimbursement programs
Women's health benefits
Family planning accounts
If your employer offers any of these, ask HR directly: "Can I use this benefit for certified doula services?" The answer is frequently yes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance directly? We do not bill insurance directly. We provide detailed receipts and superbills that you submit for reimbursement. Most reimbursements are processed within 2 to 4 weeks.
Can I use my Carrot funds to pay YourCherish directly? Carrot typically reimburses you after you pay — you submit your receipt through the Carrot app. We provide all necessary documentation. Some Carrot accounts allow direct payment; log into your Carrot account to check.
How much can I expect to be reimbursed? This depends entirely on your specific plan. Some plans reimburse 100% of doula costs. Others reimburse a fixed amount (e.g., $500–$1,000 toward birth support). We recommend checking your plan details before booking so you know what to expect.
What if my employer doesn't currently offer Carrot or Maven? Ask your HR department to consider adding it. Many companies have added these benefits in response to employee requests. We can also help you make the case — doula support has documented outcomes that reduce employer healthcare costs.
Is postpartum doula support also covered? Yes, in many cases. Carrot, Maven, Cleo, and NY Medicaid all include postpartum support in their doula coverage. HSA/FSA accounts can also be used for postpartum doula services.
