Fresh48 Photography at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York City
Columbia University Irving Medical Center — part of the NewYork-Presbyterian family — is one of the most respected academic medical centers in the world. It is also, for many Upper West Side and Washington Heights families, simply where they go to have their babies.
The Columbia campus has a scale and presence unlike most NYC hospitals. It is a place where complex pregnancies are managed, where maternal-fetal medicine is practiced at the highest level, and where thousands of straightforward, joyful births happen every year. We have photographed sessions at Columbia across all of these contexts.
If you're delivering at Columbia-Presbyterian and want your first hours documented, here is what working with us looks like.
What a Fresh48 Session at Columbia Looks Like
After your delivery, once you've moved from labor and delivery to your postpartum room, you reach out to us.
We come to the Columbia campus, navigate to your unit, and find your room. We begin quietly — no direction, no setup, no artificial light. We work with what your room has: the light from the windows, the moments that are already happening, the specific emotional reality of your family at that hour.
We stay 1.5 to 2.5 hours. We deliver your gallery within 5 to 7 business days.
About Delivering at Columbia-Presbyterian
Columbia University Irving Medical Center's Obstetrics and Gynecology program is one of the largest in New York, with expertise that spans low-risk births through the most complex maternal-fetal medicine cases. The hospital is particularly well-known for:
High-risk obstetrics: Columbia's Maternal-Fetal Medicine program is nationally recognized. Many families who come to Columbia have traveled from across the region specifically for its expertise.
Midwifery: Columbia offers midwifery-attended births alongside its OB program. Families who choose this option often find Fresh48 a natural complement to their birth philosophy.
Volume and diversity: Columbia-Presbyterian serves one of the most diverse patient populations in the city. It delivers babies for families from Washington Heights, the Upper West Side, Harlem, and beyond.
For Fresh48 sessions, the Columbia campus requires a bit more logistical preparation than smaller hospitals — the facility is large, parking and access take coordination, and the postpartum floors are busy. We manage all of that on our end. Your only job is to be ready when we arrive.
A Note on Sensitivity and Complex Births
Columbia's maternal-fetal medicine program means we occasionally photograph sessions here for families who have experienced complicated pregnancies, preterm deliveries, or NICU admissions.
If your birth involves any of these circumstances, please reach out to us directly before booking. We approach complex birth contexts with full sensitivity to your situation, your baby's medical needs, and what is possible given your care team's guidance. These sessions often produce some of the most meaningful photographs we make.
Fresh48 After a C-Section at Columbia
Columbia performs a significant volume of cesarean births, including many planned procedures for high-risk pregnancies. We are experienced at timing and photographing Fresh48 sessions following C-sections at this campus.
After your surgery and recovery, once you're in your postpartum room and feeling settled, you reach out to us. We arrive and begin. The session covers your first hours in the room — which are often the most tender, most real moments of the entire experience.

What Families Delivering at Columbia Often Ask
Does Columbia-Presbyterian allow professional photographers on the postpartum floor? Yes, with the patient's approval and the care team's knowledge. Note your photographer in your birth plan and flag it with your admitting nurse. Given the size and complexity of the Columbia campus, we also recommend giving your nurse the photographer's name and phone number for easy coordination.
What if I'm delivering at Columbia because of a high-risk pregnancy? Please discuss the session with your OB or MFM team before booking. We adapt entirely to your medical situation. If there are restrictions on visitors or specific protocols for your case, we work within them. We have photographed sensitive and complex birth contexts many times.
How do I get to the postpartum floor? Is there a specific entrance? We handle our own navigation to the facility and your floor. You don't need to manage logistics on your end. We've been to Columbia many times and know the building.
What if my family is coming from the Upper West Side or Washington Heights — do you serve those areas? Yes. We photograph sessions for families across Manhattan, including the Upper West Side, Washington Heights, Harlem, and surrounding neighborhoods. Columbia draws patients from a wide geographic catchment and we follow wherever our clients are.
What if the session needs to happen in the NICU? Reach out to us directly. NICU sessions at Columbia are possible in coordination with the unit's nursing team. We approach these with full respect for the medical environment.
