DUMBO & Brooklyn Bridge Park Maternity Photography

DUMBO — Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass — is the single most requested location for maternity photography in Brooklyn. The cobblestone streets, the looming ironwork of the Manhattan Bridge, the waterfront park with the Manhattan skyline as your backdrop: there is no other neighborhood in New York that packs this much visual meaning into four square blocks.

We've photographed dozens of sessions here. We know exactly when to arrive, exactly where to stand, and exactly how to make it feel personal rather than touristic.

Why DUMBO Is Perfect for Maternity Photography

The Manhattan Bridge Arch (Washington Street) This is the most-photographed street in Brooklyn — and for good reason. The steel arch of the Manhattan Bridge frames the street with the Empire State Building visible in the distance. At sunrise, before the tourists and the film crews arrive, it is yours. We plan sunrise sessions here specifically so you have this image without sharing it with 200 strangers.

Brooklyn Bridge Park The waterfront park running along the East River offers sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the water. The piers, the grass, the promenade — each section has a different quality of light and a different mood.

Jane's Carousel The restored 1922 wooden carousel in its glass pavilion on Pier 0 is one of Brooklyn's most beautiful architectural landmarks. Sessions at Jane's Carousel have a timeless, almost cinematic quality that photographs unlike anything else in the borough.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade (5 minutes away) Just above DUMBO, the Promenade offers the skyline view that appears on every NYC postcard — but at ground level, in the quiet tree-lined neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights. A sunrise session that combines DUMBO with the Promenade is one of our most popular packages.

When to Shoot in DUMBO

Sunrise (strongly recommended): DUMBO is genuinely crowded from 9am onward on weekends, and often busy on weekday mornings as well. Sunrise sessions — typically 6:00–7:30am depending on the season — give you the neighborhood with almost no other people, the softest light of the day, and an atmosphere that feels completely different from any midday visit.

If you've thought "I'd love to do maternity photos in DUMBO but it always looks so crowded" — the answer is sunrise.

Golden Hour: Weekday evening golden hour sessions can work well, especially in spring and fall when the park is less crowded with tourists. We'll advise on the specific evening logistics.

What to Wear for DUMBO Maternity Photos

Cobblestone and waterfront settings photograph beautifully with:‍ ‍

  • Flowing gowns in blush, cream, white, sage, or deep navy

  • Fitted wrap dresses that show your bump

  • Linen or chiffon fabrics that move in the river breeze

  • Comfortable flat shoes — the cobblestones are real and uneven

For the iconic Manhattan Bridge arch shot: white and cream gowns stand out against the steel and street in a way that darker colors don't. We'll discuss specific looks in your pre-session consultation.
