Maternity Photography on the Upper East Side, NYC

The Upper East Side is one of Manhattan's most established family neighborhoods — classic pre-war buildings, tree-lined avenues, Central Park's east edge a short walk from nearly everywhere. For maternity photography, it offers some of the most beautiful residential blocks in the city and access to the eastern side of Central Park, which photographs differently — and, for our purposes, better in the morning — than the more popular western paths.

Central Park's East Side

Most maternity photographers default to the west side of Central Park. The east side — particularly the area around the Conservatory Garden at 105th Street, the Metropolitan Museum steps at 82nd Street, and the reservoir path between 86th and 96th — offers stunning locations with significantly less foot traffic.

The Conservatory Garden is one of New York City's hidden gems: a formal garden in the northeast corner of the park, accessible through a Vanderbilt Gate off Fifth Avenue. Early morning sessions here, when the flowers are lit from the east and the garden is quiet, produce images unlike anywhere else in Manhattan. These are not the Central Park photos everyone has. They are specifically and recognizably yours.

The Residential Streets

Fifth Avenue's east side across from the park, the brownstone side streets of the 70s and 80s, the classical architecture of Park Avenue — the Upper East Side's residential streetscapes photograph beautifully in afternoon light. For families who want something less park-and-nature and more city-and-architecture, the UES streets provide a backdrop that feels distinctly Manhattan.

In-Home Maternity on the Upper East Side

UES pre-war apartments — particularly the larger classic sixes and sevens on Park and Fifth Avenues — have ceilings and windows that most photographers dream about. But the smaller apartments work beautifully too. The specific light in your apartment on a Thursday morning, the nursery corner in progress, the quiet of your space in those last weeks — these are irreplaceable.
