Maternity Photography in NYC: The Complete Guide
Maternity Photography in NYC: The Complete Guide
You're 28 weeks pregnant and someone has told you to book a maternity session. Or maybe nobody has told you and you're wondering whether you even want one. Or maybe you know you want one but you have no idea how to choose a location, a photographer, a time of day, an outfit — in a city with unlimited options and not enough hours.
This guide is for you. Everything NYC families need to know about maternity photography, in one place.
Why Maternity Photography Matters (And Why Many People Skip It)
The most common reason people don't book a maternity session: they think they won't care about the photos.
The most common thing people say after they don't book one: "I wish I had."
Pregnancy changes you in ways you can't fully see while you're inside it. The specific shape of your body at 31 weeks — the curve of your belly, the way you carry, the particular way you hold yourself — you will never look exactly like this again. Not with the next pregnancy. Not in any other version of your life.
Maternity photography is documentation of a specific, irreversible moment in your family's story.
Whether you do it in Central Park or in your apartment, at golden hour or during a cloudy afternoon, with a flowing gown or in jeans and a tank top — it will matter to you. It always does.
When to Book Your Maternity Session
The ideal timing for maternity photography is 28 to 34 weeks.
At 28 to 34 weeks:
Your bump is full, round, and undeniably visible
You still have enough mobility and energy for an outdoor session
You have time before your due date to ensure scheduling flexibility
Before 28 weeks: The bump can look smaller in photos than you feel it is. Some families prefer an earlier session — it's a valid choice, just different.
After 35 weeks: Outdoor sessions can become uncomfortable. Mobility is reduced. If you're past 34 weeks and haven't booked, reach out immediately — we'll adapt.
Book as early as possible. Spring and fall sessions fill 2–3 months in advance. If your due date is in summer (May–July), your maternity window falls in March–April — prime spring booking season. Don't wait.
Choosing Your Location: The NYC Options
New York City offers extraordinary options for maternity photography. The right location depends on what story you want to tell.
Central Park, Manhattan
The classic choice — 843 acres of forest, water, and architecture in the middle of Manhattan. Works for almost any style from formal portraits to documentary couples sessions. Read our full Central Park guide →
Best spots: Bow Bridge, Bethesda Fountain, the Ramble, the Mall at sunrise Best time: Golden hour or sunrise
DUMBO / Brooklyn Bridge Park
The most Brooklyn choice — cobblestones, the Manhattan Bridge arch, the East River waterfront, the skyline. Instantly recognizable and deeply evocative of New York City. Read our full DUMBO guide →
Best spots: Washington Street (Manhattan Bridge arch), Jane's Carousel, the piers Best time: Sunrise strongly recommended — DUMBO is crowded any other time

What to Wear for Your Maternity Session
This is the question we get most before every session. Here are the principles:
Show your bump. The whole point is documenting your pregnancy. Flowing dresses that blow in the wind are beautiful, but so is a fitted dress or top that actually shows the shape of your body.
Solid colors, soft palettes. Patterns compete with the background. Neons fight the light. For outdoor NYC sessions, we recommend: ivory, cream, blush, dusty rose, sage green, dusty blue, warm tan, terracotta.
Fabrics that move. Chiffon, linen, jersey, and silk all photograph beautifully outdoors. Stiff fabrics don't.
One look for you, one for your partner. Coordinate tones rather than match exactly. If you're in blush, your partner could wear grey, white, or navy.
Comfortable shoes. For outdoor sessions, you will be walking. White sneakers, flat sandals, and ankle boots all work depending on your session style.
For in-home sessions: Wear what you feel like yourself in. A silk slip dress, a linen button-down shirt, a comfortable wrap dress. The goal is that you look like you — not like you dressed up for a shoot.
We send a detailed wardrobe guide with specific color recommendations for your location and season when you book.
How to Choose a Maternity Photographer in NYC
Look at their portfolio for consistency. Beautiful one-off images are easy to find. Consistent work across different clients, different apartments, different weather conditions — that's what tells you a photographer is genuinely skilled and not just lucky.
Check that they serve your neighborhood. NYC photographers often specialize in specific boroughs. Travel fees across boroughs add up, and a photographer who knows your neighborhood knows the light there.
Consider combined bookings. If you're also planning a newborn session, Fresh48 session, or birth photography, booking the same photographer for multiple services creates a visual continuity in your images that separate photographers can't replicate. YourCherish offers multi-session discounts.
Read what past clients say about the experience, not just the photos. A maternity session requires a photographer who makes you feel comfortable — not performing, not anxious about how you look, not self-conscious. Read reviews for comments about how the session felt, not just how the images turned out.
Outdoor Maternity Photography: Practical NYC Tips
Check the location ahead of time. Popular spots like DUMBO and Bow Bridge can be busy at any hour except early morning. If you've ever tried to visit these spots on a Saturday morning, you know what we mean.
Sunrise is underrated. The most consistent advice we give for NYC outdoor maternity sessions: sunrise is worth the early alarm. You get the locations without the people, the softest light of the day, and a session that feels completely different from every tourist photo you've seen from the same spot.
Golden hour is magic. The hour before sunset creates warm, flattering light that makes almost any location look extraordinary. Book your outdoor session to end at sunset.
Overcast days are not bad days. A cloudy sky is a giant diffuser — it creates even, soft light that actually flatters skin tones and bumps more than harsh midday sun. Don't panic if the weather forecast shows clouds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring my partner? My toddler? My dog? Yes to all. Partners are always included. Toddlers are wonderful — we work with their attention spans and energy, not against them. Dogs are welcome on leash at most outdoor locations and always at home sessions.
What if I'm not showing yet at 28 weeks? Everyone carries differently. If you're concerned about how your bump photographs, let's talk timing — sometimes 30–32 weeks is better for families who carry small.
What if I'm exhausted and not feeling photogenic? You will feel like yourself in the session. This is what we do — create an environment where you forget you're being photographed. Your exhaustion, your weight, your unwashed hair — none of it matters in the images. What matters is what's happening between you and your partner and the person you're carrying.
How soon after booking do I receive the images? Galleries are delivered within 7 to 10 business days of your session.
