Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center — the hospital most families still call Saint Barnabas — sits at 94 Old Short Hills Road in Livingston, part of RWJBarnabas Health. With more than 6,000 births a year it is one of the largest maternity hospitals in northern New Jersey, serving Livingston, Short Hills, Millburn, West Orange, Montclair, Summit and the surrounding Essex and Morris County towns.

Delivering at Cooperman Barnabas — What to Know
Labor and Delivery has 16 private birthing rooms, four cesarean operating rooms and a large recovery room, and the hospital says every postpartum room on its Family Centered Care Unit is private at no extra charge (a roommate only if the unit is full). The Perinatal Evaluation and Treatment Unit, where you are assessed in early labor, is on the 3rd floor of the central building, reached through the Cooperman Family Pavilion. The 56-bed Level III NICU makes it a regional center for high-risk pregnancies and newborns, and Newsweek named it one of America's Best Maternity Hospitals for 2026.
The hospital's maternity FAQ allows two support persons during labor, and it states that a doula does not count toward that number — so you can have your partner, a family member and your doula with you. After a cesarean, one support person joins you in the OR. We confirm the current rules with your care team before your due date.
