Saint Peter's is a state-designated Regional Perinatal Center with a Level IV NICU, the highest level, and a maternal-fetal medicine team for high-risk pregnancies. Families who want a low-intervention birth with the full safety net of a tertiary hospital often choose it for exactly that combination.
Low-risk families can be cared for by midwives in the Labor and Delivery Unit, or at the Mary V. O'Shea Birth Center, a midwifery-led birth center inside the hospital accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers. A doula fits naturally into either setting.
