Best Maternity Photo Locations in NYC — The Complete Guide
Best Maternity Photo Locations in NYC — The Complete Guide
New York City is one of the most visually extraordinary places in the world to take maternity photographs. The challenge is not finding a beautiful location — it's choosing the right one for you.
Here's the complete guide to NYC's best maternity photography locations, with honest notes on what each delivers and when they work best.
Central Park, Manhattan
Best for: Classic, timeless, romantic maternity images.
Central Park is the city's most iconic maternity photography destination — and with good reason. Bow Bridge, Bethesda Fountain, the Ramble, the Mall, the Boathouse — every corner offers a different light and mood.
Bow Bridge: The most photographed spot in Central Park. Arched, reflected, iconic. Works at golden hour when the light hits the bridge from the west.
The Ramble: Wild, forested, intimate. If you want images that feel far from the city — like you're deep in the woods — the Ramble delivers that.
Bethesda Fountain and Terrace: Grand, architectural, timeless. Good midday if you need to avoid the sun problems of other locations.
The Mall: The elm tree canopy creates a natural tunnel of green in spring and summer, gold in fall. One of the most beautiful natural light environments in NYC.
Best season: Spring (cherry blossoms, late March–April) and Fall (foliage, October–November). Best time: Golden hour — 5:30–7pm in spring/fall.
DUMBO & Brooklyn Bridge Park
Best for: Urban-romantic, editorial, architectural maternity images.
DUMBO has become one of the defining maternity photography settings in New York. The cobblestone streets, the arched brick warehouses, the Manhattan Bridge framed at the end of Washington Street — it's visually unlike anywhere else in the city.
Washington Street / Manhattan Bridge frame: The shot. Two cobblestone blocks with the Manhattan Bridge centered at the far end. Needs early morning or off-peak timing to avoid crowds.
Brooklyn Bridge Park: Piers 1–6 offer spectacular views of Manhattan. The bridge, the skyline, the water. Works in any direction of light.
Jane's Carousel area: Beautiful, clean, architectural. Works especially well in late afternoon when the light wraps around the carousel pavilion.
Best season: Spring and Fall. Summer works early morning only. Best time: Early morning (7–9am) or golden hour.
Prospect Park, Brooklyn
Best for: Natural, lush, warm maternity images — especially in fall.
Prospect Park is Olmsted and Vaux's other masterpiece — and many photographers argue it photographs more beautifully than Central Park precisely because it's less manicured. The Long Meadow, the Ravine, the Boathouse — each offers completely different light and mood.
The Long Meadow: Expansive open meadow with tree lines on both sides. Gorgeous in golden hour.
The Ravine: The only old-growth forest in Brooklyn. Dark, dramatic, wild. Extraordinary in fall.
Prospect Park Boathouse: Architectural, refined. Works in overcast light especially well.
Best season: Fall. The foliage in Prospect Park — especially the Ravine — is among the most beautiful in the city. Best time: Golden hour.
Brooklyn Heights Promenade
Best for: Manhattan skyline backdrop, elevated dramatic images.
The Promenade offers the most spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge available at ground level. The light from the west — over Manhattan — is extraordinary in late afternoon.
Works best in fall and winter when the sun stays low and the light is warm throughout the afternoon. Summer midday is a challenge due to harsh overhead light.
Best season: Fall, winter. Best time: 3–5pm in fall/winter.
Riverside Park, Manhattan
Best for: Lush, natural images on the Upper West Side without Central Park crowds.
Riverside Park runs four miles along the Hudson River and is dramatically less crowded than Central Park. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument area, the elm canopy on the upper park paths, and the Hudson River overlooks all photograph beautifully.
Best season: Spring and Fall. Best time: Golden hour — faces west toward the Hudson, so afternoon/evening light is exceptional.
The High Line
Best for: Modern, urban, architectural maternity images.
The High Line is a one-of-a-kind environment — elevated above the city, surrounded by wild plantings, with views of the Hudson and the Manhattan skyline. It attracts a design-forward client who wants something distinctly contemporary.
Practical note: The High Line is a public space and can be crowded. Early morning is best for fewer people in frame.
Best season: Spring and Summer (plantings are most lush). Best time: Early morning.
In-Home, Anywhere in NYC
Best for: Intimate, warm, real maternity images in the environment where you actually live.
This is our most personal recommendation. The most lasting maternity images we've made have not been at Bow Bridge or in DUMBO. They've been in a bedroom on the Upper West Side at 10am with low winter light coming through the window. In a Williamsburg loft with coffee and morning. In a Cobble Hill brownstone kitchen with a toddler running around.
In-home sessions require beautiful natural light — a room with windows that catch good light is the only requirement. We scout the light in your space before we begin.
Best season: Any season. Best time: Whenever your apartment catches the best light — we assess this together.
How to Choose
Choose Central Park if you want timeless, classic images that will look beautiful for decades. Choose DUMBO if you want something urban, editorial, distinctly New York City. Choose Prospect Park if you're a Brooklyn family who wants fall foliage and a less-touristed environment. Choose Brooklyn Heights Promenade if you want the Manhattan skyline as your backdrop. Choose Riverside Park if you're on the Upper West Side and want Central Park quality without the crowds. Choose in-home if you want the most personal, intimate images — the ones that actually capture your life right now.
We are happy to help you decide. Most clients have a sense of what they want — we help them land it.
